Tone Upper and Lower Body Muscles With Dumbbell Exercises

To tone arms, concentration curls are a common and efficient weight lifting exercise. Concentration curls begin with the dumbbell in hand and the elbow resting on the inside of the knee. Bend the arm up until it touches the shoulder, pause, and return to the starting position.

Repeat this action slowly with a pause between each repetition. After a set of ten, switch the dumbbell to the other hand. This dumbbell exercise targets the biceps and the brachialis, the muscle located on the top of the arm that flexes the elbow.

A dumbbell set can also be used to exercise and tighten muscles in the lower body. Dumbbell squats require a person to be standing with a dumbbell in each hand, with feet flat on the floor about should width apart. Slowly lower your body until your legs are parallel with the floor, as if you were sitting in a chair. After holding for a brief moment return to an upright standing position. This exercise tones thigh, hip and buttock muscles. For a more complete workout, avoid slumping your torso and keep abdominal muscles tight while squatting.

If you are looking to strengthen your deltoids, or shoulder muscles, a dumbbell press workout can be a beneficial exercise. Begin by sitting on a bench or chair with good back support and hold both dumbbells with an overhand grip. Raise the dumbbells above your shoulders with elbows pointed toward the floor. Lift the dumbbells over your head until your arms are fully extended. Pause and then lower the dumbbells to the starting position before repeating.
